Are Plantation Shutters Really Blackout?
Not quite.
Close the louvres on ordinary Plantation Shutters and you can dramatically reduce the amount of light entering the room.
But small amounts can still find their way through louvre gaps, around panels and through normal frame tolerances. That can be fine for most rooms.
But if you’re trying to sleep through an early summer sunrise, keep a child’s bedroom darker at bedtime, sleep during the day after a night shift or watch a film without glare, “almost dark” may not be dark enough.
That’s where shutters with integrated blackout blinds make sense. You keep the beautiful shutters you want to see. Then add a second layer specifically designed to reduce light further.
The result is a much darker room without sacrificing the shutters you love.

What Are Blackout Shutters with Integrated Blackout Blinds?
Think of them as two window coverings designed to work together.
At the front are your Plantation Shutters.
Behind them is a specialist room-darkening blind, designed to sit closely within its own frame or channel system. Depending on the selected system, the blind may use cellular, honeycomb or pleated construction.
The shutters provide the look, privacy and flexible daylight control.
The integrated blind provides the additional light-blocking layer that ordinary shutters don’t have.
And The Side Channels Matter
The centre of a blind isn’t usually where unwanted light becomes the biggest issue. The edges are.
A specialist room-darkening blind uses a closer-fitting arrangement around the glazing to help reduce light leakage around the sides.
When the blind is raised, it can sit discreetly behind the shutters.
