Tracked Plantation Shutters
Got an Opening That Feels Too Big for Ordinary Shutters? Good.
Because some of the most exciting shutter installations start with exactly that problem. A huge sliding door – Floor-to-ceiling glazing – A wall of glass.
That’s where Tracked Shutters change the possibilities.
Instead of asking multiple large shutter panels to hang from conventional hinges, a purpose-designed track supports and guides them across the opening.
Close them and you have beautiful Full Height Plantation Shutters with adjustable privacy and light control.
Want the view or access back? Move them. Fold them. Slide them. Stack them into the position we’ve designed.
Big Opening. Smarter Movement. Spectacular Result.
And because there is more than one way to track a shutter, I won’t force your opening around one system.
I’ll design the system around your opening.

When the Opening Gets Bigger, the Shutters Need to Work Differently
On a normal-sized window, shutter panels can often simply hinge from a surrounding frame.
But now imagine doing that across three, four or even more metres of glazing.
More panels. Taller panels. More weight. More movement. And suddenly the question isn’t simply:
“Can we put shutters there?” It’s:
“How are we going to make all those shutters work beautifully?”
That’s What the Track Solves
Tracked Shutters use a dedicated track system to support and guide multiple shutter panels across a wide opening.
When closed, they create one coordinated shutter installation.
When you want the opening clear, the panels follow the route we’ve designed for them.
They can fold together.
Or slide behind one another.
Same beautiful Plantation Shutters.
A completely different way of making them move.
The Clever Part Isn’t Putting Shutters on a Track
It’s deciding exactly what happens when you move them..
When closed, the panels create a continuous shuttered finish across the opening. Start moving them and the track guides the complete system along its planned route. But here’s where good design matters.
How many panels should there be? How wide should each one be? Which direction should they travel? Should everything move one way? Should we split the panels?
And most importantly…
Where Do You Want All Those Shutters to Finish When They’re Open?
Because they don’t disappear. The whole installation needs to be designed around the closed position AND the open position.
That’s why I treat Tracked Shutters as one complete moving system rather than simply a collection of shutter panels.
Bi-Fold or Bypass Tracked Shutters — Which Would Work Better in Your Home?
This is the big question. Both systems can cover impressive openings. But they behave completely differently when you open them.
Bi-Fold Tracked Shutters
The shutter panels are hinged together into groups. As they move along the track, they fold against one another concertina-style.
That allows a substantial installation to gather into a relatively compact stack. Depending on the opening, we could potentially:
Stack everything left. Stack everything right. Or split the panels between both sides.
This can be brilliant when you want to reveal a large proportion of the doorway or glazing.
BEST WHEN: You have suitable stacking space and want the shutters to fold away from a large part of the opening.
Bi-Pass Tracked Shutters
Bypass works differently.
Instead of folding out into the room, the panels travel along parallel track channels and slide behind one another.
That creates a clean lateral movement without a projecting concertina stack.
But there’s a trade-off. The panels still need somewhere to go. When open, they overlap one another across part of the opening.
BEST WHEN: A sliding action makes more sense than folded panels projecting into the room.
Some Openings Were Made for Tracked Shutters
Tracked systems really earn their place where width, scale or panel movement makes conventional hinged shutters less practical.
Patio & Sliding Door Shutters
Huge sliding glass doors are a natural application.
The shutters can operate as a separate moving layer in front of the glass while the design preserves your planned route into the garden.
Bi-Fold Door Shutters
Large folding doors can create spectacular openings — and some challenging shutter questions.
Tracked systems can be one possible solution depending on the doors, clearances and available stacking space.

Floor-to-Ceiling Glazing
No door required. Huge picture windows and floor-to-ceiling glazing can create exactly the same problem:
a lot of glass and a lot of shutters to control.
A track can turn the complete area into one coordinated architectural installation.
Flexible Interior Openings
Tracked shutters can also create impressive internal screens across selected room divides and other wide interior openings.

No Door? No Problem.
Some of the most impressive Tracked Shutter installations don’t have a door behind them at all
- Picture Windows
- Floor to Ceiling Glazing
- Huge Architectural Windows
- Spaces where the glass itself is one of the defining features of the room.
Covering that with lots of little conventional panels can make an incredible window feel unnecessarily busy. A tracked system gives us another option. Treat the entire opening as one coordinated architectural feature.
We can design the panel widths around the glazing. Choose louvre proportions that complement the scale. Plan where the shutters will sit when open. And create something that looks impressive because the window is enormous — not despite it.
Big Glass Deserves Big-Picture Thinking
The aim is simple. Keep the scale. Lose the clutter.
Two Different Ways to Control a Huge Area of Glass
This is where Tracked Plantation Shutters become particularly clever. Because you’re controlling the opening in two completely different ways.
Control The Louvre blades
Angle the louvres to soften direct sunlight, reduce glare and interrupt unwanted views while still allowing useful daylight into the room.
Control the Shutter Panels
Want the glass completely open again? Move the actual shutter panels.
Fold or slide them into their planned open position and reveal more of the glazing.
From Wide Open to Completely Private
Morning? Move the panels and enjoy the view. Strong afternoon sun? Bring them across and adjust the louvres. Evening? Close everything down.
One huge opening. Far more control over how it feels throughout the day.
Do You Actually Need Tracked Shutters?
Maybe not.
And that’s important.
Tracked Shutters aren’t automatically better than conventional hinged shutters.
They’re better when the opening needs what a track provides.
For a normal-sized window, a beautifully designed hinged shutter installation may be the simplest answer.
But across a huge span, the track gives us the ability to support, guide and coordinate multiple Full Height panels far more deliberately.
So I don’t start with: “Tracked or hinged?”
I start with: “Show me the opening.” Then I’ll recommend the system that makes sense.
Tracked Shutters Are Exactly Where Independent Advice Matters
The more complicated the opening, the less interested I am in forcing it into a standard answer. With more than 25 years measuring, designing and fitting shutters, I’ll look at the complete installation before recommending the system.
Then We Choose the Product
- How wide is the opening
- How many panels make sense?
- Where can they stack?
- Would folding shutters project into an awkward part of the room?
- Would Bypass leave enough of the view clear?
- Where can the track be positioned
- How will you actually walk through the opening?
Not the other way around.
Because I’m independent, I can compare suitable shutter manufacturers and track systems rather than being tied to one range. And you’ll deal directly with me from the initial survey through to the final installation.
- No generic track recommendation.
- No trying to make your opening fit the product.
- Just a system designed around your home.
How I Design a Tracked Shutter System Around Your Opening
You don’t need to arrive knowing whether you need Bi-Fold or Bypass. That’s exactly what the survey is for.
Discuss and Plan
1
I’ll measure the complete opening and assess the glazing, doors, floor levels, handles, fixing positions and available space. We’ll also establish how you need to use the opening.
Design and Survey
2
I’ll work out how the panels should fold, slide, stack or overlap, then recommend the most suitable track system, panel configuration, louvre size, material and finish.
Fit and Fine Tune
3
I’ll personally install the track and shutters, carefully align the panels and make the final adjustments so everything looks right and moves smoothly.
Tracked Shutters — The Questions You’re Probably Asking
Are My Windows or Doors Too Big for Plantation Shutters?
Not necessarily. Very wide openings are exactly where a tracked system can become useful because the track supports and guides multiple shutter panels rather than relying on a conventional hinged arrangement.
Where Do All the Shutters Go When They’re Open?
Bi-Fold panels fold into a planned stack, while Bypass panels overlap on parallel tracks. The number and width of panels affect how much space they occupy, which is why the open position should be designed before manufacture.
Are Tracked Shutters Difficult to Open?
The purpose of the track is to support and guide the shutter panels as a coordinated system. The exact movement depends on the product and configuration, and the final installation needs to be correctly fitted and adjusted.
Can Plantation Shutters Really Go on a Track?
Yes. Purpose-designed tracked Plantation Shutters use a track system to support and guide multiple shutter panels across a substantial opening.
How Do Bi-Fold Tracked Shutters Open?
Groups of hinged panels move along the track and fold against one another as they travel towards their planned stacking position.
Are Tracked Shutters Good for Sliding Patio Doors?
They can be an excellent solution because the shutters operate as a separate moving layer in front of the sliding glass.
Can You Use Tracked Shutters on Large Windows?
Yes. Large picture windows, floor-to-ceiling glazing and other wide window openings can be excellent applications where a track helps support and coordinate multiple panels.
How Much Do Tracked Shutters Cost?
Price depends on the opening dimensions, number and specification of shutter panels, track system and installation complexity. A home survey allows the complete system to be designed before it’s accurately quoted.
How Do I Know Whether I Need Bi-Fold or Bypass Tracked Shutters?
It depends on the opening, available stacking space, how much of the view you want clear and whether folded or overlapping panels make more sense in the room. You don’t need to choose beforehand — I’ll work through that during your survey.
Will Tracked Shutters Get in the Way?
A properly planned system should account for access routes, furniture, handles and the space around the opening. That’s why I design where the panels will travel and finish rather than concentrating only on how the shutters look closed.
What Are Tracked Shutters?
Tracked Shutters are Plantation Shutter panels supported and guided by a dedicated track system. They’re particularly useful across wide windows, large glazed doors and openings where numerous conventional hinged panels would be less practical.
What’s the Difference Between Bi-Fold and Bypass Tracked Shutters?
Bi-Fold Tracked Shutters hinge together and concertina as they move. Bypass panels travel along parallel track channels and slide behind one another.
Can Tracked Shutters Work With Bi-Fold Doors?
Yes. A tracked shutter system can be one possible solution across Bi-Fold Doors, depending on the actual doors, clearances, access and available stacking space.
Explore Bi-Fold Door Shutters
Do Tracked Shutters Need a Bottom Track?
Track arrangements vary between products and installations. Different systems can use different combinations of support and guidance, so the correct specification should be chosen around the actual opening rather than assumed beforehand.
Got an Opening That Feels Too Big for Ordinary Shutters? Perfect.
Because those are often the installations where Tracked Shutters make the biggest transformation. Imagine that huge wall of glass now. Full Height Shutters stretched beautifully across it.
Clean architectural lines. Large louvres controlling the light. Privacy when you want it.
Then imagine opening them.
The panels begin to move. They fold or slide along the track. They travel into the position we’ve designed.
And suddenly that huge view opens up again.
That’s the Magic of a Properly Designed Tracked Shutter System
You don’t have to choose between: Beautiful shutters OR a huge opening.
The whole point is designing a system that lets you enjoy both. Maybe Bi-Fold is the answer. Maybe Bypass. Maybe another shutter solution makes more sense once I’ve seen the opening.
You don’t need to work that out. Just Show Me the Opening. I’ll show you what’s possible.
